Centred on 17th avenue SE in the neighbourhood of Forest Lawn is Calgary’s International Avenue. The establishment of the new Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) has helped revitalize 17th Avenue and Forest Lawn – making it the epicentre of multiculturalism in Calgary, and a must-see destination for both residents and and Calgarians from other communities alike. Let’s take a look at how Calgary’s International Avenue has taken shape.
Overhauling Calgary’s International Avenue was an undertaking that had to start from the ground up. This meant giving 17th Avenue SE – from 26th to 61st street – a whole new look and layout. To make the area more welcoming and encourage visitors to frequent the re-imagined International Avenue, the City of Calgary invested in new and widened sidewalks, added new bus stops, and introduced new rapid transit lanes which give visitors access to side streets and businesses. Another great addition to the area is the new pedestrian overpass across Deerfoot Trail. Just recently opened, the overpass is set to bring in even more traffic to International Avenue by allowing bikers and people travelling on foot to easily access the area. This recent remodel of 17th Avenue’s infrastructure is meant to emphasize its community spirit.
With a third of the area’s businesses being food-related, Calgary’s International Avenue has become the go-to location for restaurant operators from around the world. Visitors can delight their taste buds with cuisines from almost every continent – from Vietnamese to Portuguese and Texas-style barbecue. To add to the experience of the avenue, you’ll find vibrant artwork that is a true reflection of Calgary’s multicultural nature. When walking down International Avenue, you’ll notice that the bus stops are decorated by local artists from diverse backgrounds. You’ll even stumble across the occasional mural which brings even more life to the already character-filled streets.
There’s no doubt that International Avenue’s recently completed renovation means a brighter future for the affected communities and business owners. With its new look and welcoming feel, the avenue is predicted to be a major attraction for investors. New shops will be added to its already impressive repertoire of retailers – bringing employment opportunities to the community. Not to mention, increased traffic from both local visitors and tourists means that outlet owners on International Avenue can expect to be in business for a long time.
The City of Calgary has successfully renovated its International Avenue – adding new infrastructure, vibrant art and fresh experiences for Calgarians to enjoy. However, this has been done while still maintaining the charm of the communities surrounding the avenue. With diverse restaurants, one-of-a-kind retailers, and art that reflects a multicultural society, International Avenue is a true mix of different cultures and a great representation of community.
