The New Horizon Mall: A unique international shopping experience
Living in northeast Calgary is about to get better! With CrossIron Mills, Costco and Lowe’s already easily accessible, northeast Calgary will soon welcome one of the nation’s largest shopping centres to the area. In May, 500 multicultural retailers will set up shop inside Canada’s second-largest mall just north of Calgary beside CrossIron Mills.
Opening as early as this spring, the New Horizon Mall will provide a unique international shopping experience to north Calgary and surrounding communities. The 320,000 square-foot, 2-storey mall will feature boutique shops with products in fashion, jewelry, electronics, lifestyle, dining, toys, health & wellness and so much more; all with a vibrant international flavour. The mall will also have heated underground parking, an International events stage for performances and entertainment, and an International food court with over 25 amazing dining choices from around the world.
With so many shops in the two-storey building, shoppers are guaranteed to get a truly unique shopping experience unlike anything else in Calgary. The shopping centre will look and feel much more like a marketplace and less like the traditional shopping mall style that Calgarians have become accustomed to. And much like the typical marketplace, shoppers are likely to discover something different and new every time they visit. The shops will range in size from small, boutique spaces of 285 square feet to larger stores of 855 square feet. For merchants, these spaces range in price from $190,000 to $750,000 and the shops are 98% sold. Previously developed multicultural malls in Canada have placed an emphasis on particular cultures, but New Horizon Mall will cater to a variety of ethnicities.
While also providing another great selection of amenities to surrounding communities, New Horizon Mall is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. The Torgan Group, the company developing the project, estimates that the mall will create roughly 1,400 new jobs when it is at full capacity. It is also expected to boast twice as many shops as Calgary’s current largest mall, Chinook Centre, which has 250 shops.
The shopping centre, modelled after Toronto’s multicultural Pacific Mall, has been a longer process than originally expected. The plan for the New Horizon Mall began in 2014. Due to difficulties getting started, it wasn’t until 2016 that the project broke ground. Two years later, and the mall is now putting its finishing touches on the building’s exterior, and it will then begin moving in new tenants. Another unique element of this mall is that the tenants will almost entirely be owner-operators through a condominium-style ownership model; instead of the typical mall model, where a space is leased out to a large company. With this model, owners won’t have to worry about fluctuating lease prices or other similar factors because they will own their space.
For residents in communities like Redstone, the New Horizon Mall in Balzac will be a very welcome addition to northeast Calgary’s already vibrant and rich cultural mosaic.
