This summer has been one of the hottest on record for the city of Calgary. The weather has been gorgeous and it has been a great season for getting outside and soaking up the sunshine. As much as we all love the heat summer brings, these roasting hot temperatures can also bring serious dangers to human life, health, and safety that leave us scrambling for somewhere to hide out and cool down for a little while. During long, hot summers like we are experiencing this year, air conditioning becomes a cool topic of conversation for households that are struggling to beat the heat. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, you are likely weighing the various pros and cons of having a unit installed. To help you cool off this summer, we have put together a list of the top benefits that air conditioning can provide for you and your home.
Air conditioning is good for your health
Though heat can provide a feeling of comfort, extreme heat can also be very dangerous to your health. Prolonged exposure to heat can often result in dehydration and heat stroke; two very serious and dangerous conditions. Sometimes, these conditions sneak up on you and are not noticed or treated until it’s too late.
Having air conditioning doesn’t mean you can’t still go outside and soak up the heat and sunshine, it simply provides a safe cool space to help regulate your temperature when your body begins to overheat. It helps cool your body off, allowing your body to naturally regulate its internal temperature.
Sleep in comfort through the night
We all need our eight hours of sleep every night. Sleep helps revitalize the body and mind. If your home is too warm on hot summer nights, getting a good night’s sleep can become quite challenging. Your heart rate increases, you begin to sweat, and you spend the remainder of the night staring up at the ceiling waiting for the morning to come. It’s moments like this where you can’t help but wish you had air conditioning!
Air conditioning doesn’t mean the room has to be icy cold all the time. A pleasantly air conditioned room allows your body to maintain its normal temperature and ensures greater comfort while you sleep. You can stay comfortably wrapped under your covers and enjoy a full night’s sleep. If you’re able to get a better sleep at night, you wake up the following morning more refreshed and ready to take on the day!
Cooler temperatures make for cooler tempers
It’s not just our bodies that heat up in the summer months. As the mercury in our thermometers rise, so do our tempers! When it heats up outside, it causes an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure. This increase in blood pressure causes your behaviour to become more aggressive and you may not even notice it. Air conditioning can help keep you from becoming a hot-head as the regulated temperature helps to lower your heart rate and naturally bring calm to your body.
Whether it is at work, home, or in public, a cooler environment makes it easier to keep your emotions in check and stay relaxed. In other words, a cooler, air conditioned environment makes it easier to chill out and keep the peace!
Better air quality
An often overlooked advantage of air conditioning is that it also improves air quality in your home! Every day, we breathe in air outside that is contaminated with pollutants, bacteria, and germs. Wouldn’t it be nice to come home to a cool, clean space and breathe in clean, pure air? That’s what you get with air conditioning!
While providing temperate air to your home, air conditioning units also circulate and filter the air it distributes. This filtration process removes pollutants from the air going into your home while also removing allergens, dust and other irritants that may decrease your air quality. If you have allergies, this is especially important as these pollutants could trigger an allergic reaction for many people.
Protects furniture & appliances
Typically when we buy furniture, we purchase it with the expectation that it will come with longevity and be a featured piece within our home for friends and family to enjoy. Unfortunately, heat has the ability to wreak havoc on your furniture! Heat in confined spaces, such as your home, breeds humidity and moisture. This moisture is what does damage to your furniture. If you have wooden furniture, the wood can begin to warp, or veneered finishes can start to peel off. Leather furniture is just as susceptible to heat. Your extra comfortable leather recliner absorbs any moisture you may give off; causing it to rot at an accelerated rate, ruining it long before its time.
The effect of heat is also noticeable on electronics. Typically, heat does a lot more harm than good on your electronics and appliances. These devices usually give off a lot of heat while they function. Hot temperatures, in conjunction with warm devices, is a recipe for disaster as your electronics are on a fast-track to overheating.
Boosted Home Security
When you’re stuck inside your hot, muggy house, nothing is more invigorating than cracking open the windows or opening the doors and letting the air flow through. Even though it may lower the temperature of your home by letting air flow through, it also makes your home more susceptible to security threats.
Regardless of what neighbourhood you live in, home security should always be a concern. Open doors and windows just aren’t safe. An open window or open door immediately makes your home a target as there is an unlocked, open path to the inside of your home. Having air conditioning removes the need to open windows and doors to cool off the inside of your home. This immediately improves the security of your home as closed windows and doors make it less enticing for intruders. Providing comfort, healthier living, and home security; air conditioning can do it all for your home!
From health and safety, to home security, having air conditioning in your home can provide you with so many amazing benefits that for most people, make it well worth the investment. It can save you tremendous amounts of money in the long term by preserving your home and your health, while also providing you with a cool, relaxing living space for you to enjoy. With such a breadth of great benefits, it’s easy to put your air conditioning concerns on ice.
